We all remember our teacher or parent telling us, "You won't always have a calculator in your back pocket." Well, it turns out they were right because I keep it in my left pocket 😂

With Chat GPT and AI becoming more prominent in our daily lives, it begs the question. Should kids be allowed to use AI for schoolwork?

How is it any different than using Microsoft Word with its built-in spelling and grammar tools to write an essay for English class? Or using a calculator to do the basic parts of a more complex math problem?

The end goal is still the same, why not allow them the use of any tool that can help them better articulate their message. It probably wouldn't surprise you to learn that this article itself was partially writen using AI. I took a bunch of notes I jotted down weeks ago about this topic while waiting for my coffee order at Starbucks, plugged them into ChatGPT, took the results, added my unique flare and humour, and voila, you have this article, run on sentences and all.


I submit that instead of banning the use of AI in schoolwork, teachers should embrace its potential and encourage students to use it, but with set guidelines. Teach them the AI Prompts that will help them bring their thoughts to life. There are plenty of brilliant people who don't know how to articulate their thoughts into written words or speech. The power of AI opens up all sorts of possibilities and could bring about a socio-educational equality never before seen in the history of mankind.

To paraphrase a line from the TV Show Halt and Catch Fire, "It isn't the thing... It is the thing that gets us to the thing."

Bridging the Gap Between Technology and Education
